October 2012

As a postscript to last month’s notes, which had to be sent in beforehand, we want to say a big thank you to Rev. Cliff for arranging a bell ringing lesson for 6th class and the adults after the Diocesan Schools Service in Christchurch. This was the highlight of the day for us. We never realised how technical the whole bell ringing business is!

The Parents Association A.G. M. which was held on Weds. 3rd October in Athy Model School was well attended. Unfortunately, our guest speaker, Kildare’s Road Safety Officer, did not attend as expected. In a subsequent phone call, he asked me to pass on his apologies to all for not attending.

I would like to thank Rhonda Colton, Stuart Cole, Vivian Cummins and Karen Noonan, the outgoing members of the Parents Association,   for all their hard work and support over the last three years and to welcome Laura Perry, Adele Rowan, Beverly Daly and Chris Bradshaw onto the committee. We look forward to working with them.

Our Book Fair was very well supported and we earned nearly €500 worth of books for our school, as well as a set of class novels for 1st and 2nd class. Thank you so much to pupils and parents for your support.

We’d also like to thank Athy Library for donating a large quantity of children’s books to our school library. We now have a fine stock of books and will soon need more shelving for them all.

Swimming will commence for Infants, 5th and 6th classes on Monday 5th November and will continue for 6 weeks.

The Green Schools committee, which is made up of Miss Neill, Mrs Deane and the following pupils: Cian Cobbe, Beverley Colton, Clare Cole, Richard Ogunwemimo, Jamie Burns and Tim Perry, has held a number of meetings already to discuss plans for the coming school year. A poster and motto competition is being held amongst the pupils. There will be a prize for the best poster in each classroom, and an overall prize for the winning motto which will become our Green School motto.

Thank you to Eleanor Cobbe, who spent an afternoon with Mrs Griffin, 1st and 2nd class, planting bulbs in the school grounds. We look forward to watching these come up in the spring.

Our school website will soon be getting a whole new look. We plan to post these monthly notes on it as well as a little on the school’s history and other relevant information.

We welcome Dawn Cobbe who will be on teaching practice with us in the senior room from 12th November until early December.

Parent Teacher meetings will be held from 2.30 pm onwards on Weds 21st November.

The School Carol Service will be held on Sunday 16th December, at 11 o’ clock.

The Junior Christmas trip will take place on Weds 12th December while the Senior trip will be on Tues 18th December.
