Board of Management We welcome the new members of the Board: Laura Perry and Karl Colton (Parent Nominees), Karyn Cole (Teacher Nominee), Ethel Edghill and Brian Ovington (Community Nominees).
We wish to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to the following outgoing Board members for their support and commitment during their time on the Board: Irene Higginson, Hazel Condell, Jane Burns and Walter Craig.
MS Readathon Our pupils raised an amazing €2356.65 for MS Ireland through the MS Readathon. A special mention for Leon and Mya Mc Aleenan who raised €610 between them, Ben Leahy who raised €170.50 and Taz Chinamasa who raised €190! Well done to all the children who took part and a big thank you to those who supported them.
Songs of Praise A big thank you to the pupils who sang at the Songs of Praise service in the Dominican Church on 1st November. It was felt very special for us to be a part of this occasion and the pupils sang and behaved really well. Thank you to Dean Philip Knowles and Liz Deane for preparing the children for the service.
Science Workshop 5th and 6th class greatly enjoyed their recent visit to Athy Library where they took part in a workshop based on Optics. This was very hands on, involving the children in activities such as making lenses and magnifying glasses.
Swimming A reminder that there will be no swimming on Mon 30th November due to the Senior Christmas trip. The last two swimming sessions will be Mon 7th and Mon 21st December.
Tin Whistle 3rd and 4th class are learning the tin whistle with Melanie Butler at present. We look forward to hearing them play at the School Carol Service.
A reminder that our School Carol Service will take place on Sunday 20th December in St. Michael’s Church at 11 am.

School Calendar A big thank you to the Parents Association committee and to all who helped them for their work in organising the school calendar which will be on sale from mid November. They managed the recent setting up of photos in the school with the minimum of disruption to the school day and the children had a great time taking part. We strongly encourage everyone to support this fundraiser.

Swimming will resume for Infants, 3rd and 4th classes for six weeks after the Halloween midterm break. Please note there will be no swimming on Mon 30th November due to the senior Christmas trip. Pupils will swim instead on Mon 21st December.

The Parents Association AGM took place on Monday 12th October. The guest speaker on the night was Kildare Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh. Despite a small turnout of parents on the night, there was a constructive and lively discussion about general road safety on the campus and in the town. We welcome the following new members onto the committee: Tara Stacey, Marie Kenny, Ashley Cole and Sarah Cullen, and look forward to working together. We wish to thank the outgoing members: Adele Rowan, (committee) Jane Burns and Karl Colton (Parents’ Nominees) for their hard work, commitment and support during their term on the P.A.

A big thank you to Richard Daly and his staff for welcoming 5th and 6th class to their Open Day in Athy College on 25th September. The pupils had a very interesting morning being shown around the school.

6th class attended the annual Diocesan Schools Service in Christchurch Cathedral on Thurs 15th Oct. Our pupils behaved exceptionally well on the day. Special praise goes to Ellen Burns and Dearbhla Bradshaw, who read so well in front of a very large congregation. Well done, all!

We had a Dress Up Day on Friday 24th October in support of the Kildare Hospice on the Curragh. Well done to everyone who dressed up and supported this; the school was a riot of colour and activity on the day.

Our classrooms are full of bookworms at the moment, most of whom are taking part in the MS Readathon. Keep up the reading, everyone!

A huge thank you to Teresa Fitzpatrick, Frances Worthley and Barbara Cole for their year round assistance in setting up and working with the infants during weekly Art sessions.

Our Guided Reading sessions have finished until February. We sincerely thank the parishioners and parents who gave up their time to listen to our pupils reading in small groups. We really appreciate your input.

Word Wasp sessions are continuing in the mornings. Again, thank you to the volunteers who work with the children on this. We are very fortunate to have so many people willing to give their time and assistance to our pupils. If you are interested in helping with knitting in Mrs. Deane’s classroom (3rd & 4th class) in January or with Guided Reading in February, please let us know.

Our pupils (2nd class upwards) have been invited to sing at the Songs of Praise service in the Dominican Church on Sunday 1st November, at 3.30 pm. Other schools in the town will also be represented there. This should be a lovely service, and we encourage families to attend if possible.

Parent teacher meetings will take place in the afternoons, after school, straight after midterm break.

The Christmas Trips organised by the P.A. this year are as follows:

3rd to 6th classes will be going to hear and see the RTE Symphony Orchestra performing ‘Musical Adventures’ on 30th Nov. in the National Concert Hall in Dublin.

Infants, 1st and 2nd classes are attending ‘Snow Play’ in the Riverbank theatre in Newbridge on Mon 14th December. Many thanks to Dolores Delaney, P.A. secretary, for organising these trips which promise to be very enjoyable.

Please note that our School Carol Service will take place on Sunday 20th December in St. Michael’s Church at 11 am.

October 2015 Newsletter

We are all nicely settled back into school life by now. A big welcome to our new Infants– William Delaney, Neal Lazenby, Ian Mc Cann, Evan Stacey, Felix Lynch, Kyle Lazenby, Noel Nordens, Jayden Gaffney, Kia Forde, Beth Dowling, Heidi Dowling, Claire Kingston, Céilí Rourke, Lauryn Cole and Luca Mos. We also welcome Sam Massey and Quincy Macharia into 6th class. Well done to all the new infants who have adjusted to Big School so quickly and are working very hard!

Swimming is up and running again for 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th classes until the Halloween break, and for infants, 3rd and 4th classes for six weeks after Halloween.

Two members of the Irish Defence Forces visited our school on Weds 16th September to present us with an Irish flag and a copy of the 1916 Proclamation. We plan to raise the Irish flag beside our green flag and to frame and display the proclamation in our school.

Student Placement We would like to welcome Louise Hendy to the school. Louise is a 2nd year student in CICE & will be joining Mrs Deane, 3rd and 4th class, on observation in October, and on student placement for three weeks in November.

PA AGM The Parents Association AGM will take place on Monday 12th October at 7.15 pm. The guest speaker on the night is Kildare Road Safety Officer Declan Keogh, who will be speaking about Road Safety and your Child, after the AGM, at 8 pm. We strongly urge all parents to attend the AGM. It is a great opportunity to learn about the work the P.A. does as well as any recent developments in our school.

We will be having a Dress Up Day on Friday 24th October in support of the Kildare Hospice on the Curragh so now is the time to start planning your outfits! Our school will be taking part in the MS Readathon this year. This will involve the children reading lots and lots of books in aid of a very worthwhile cause so we hope that it will be well supported.

Thank you to the parent volunteers who are coming in to listen to the children reading in small groups or who have volunteered for the Word Wasp programme. Your support is much appreciated and it is a great help to both teachers and children.

We have recently invested in five new laptops, with the help of the Board of Management. This brings our stock to fifteen and will be of great benefit to the pupils for activities such as literacy and numeracy games as well as project work. We would like to thank the Board of Management for their support with this.

A reminder to all parents that a photographer will be taking photos for the school calendar on Tues 29th Sept. Infant pupils will be staying until 2.20 pm on this day. Children are to attend school in full uniform and will change into costume during the day.

A reminder that school will be closed for midterm break from Mon 26th to Fri 30th October.

Thank you to the 6th class pupils and parents, who worked tirelessly on the day. Thank you to everyone who supported the sale, whether by donating raffle prizes, helping or coming along to the sale. It is now flying proudly outside the front of our school. Thank you to Gwenda, Liz, the Green Schools Committee and all who helped us to achieve this.

It was lovely to meet both them and their parents and we look forward to getting to know them over their time in the Model School. Thank you to the P.A. for serving the refreshments at this and after the End of Year service.

We recently had a visit from Michelle and her pet dog Ben from the Kildare Animal Foundation. Michelle gave the pupils a talk about how best to look after their animals. She also explained the role of the Kildare Animal Foundation. The children were asked to bring in items which would be of use to the Foundation. Pupils donated very generously and Michelle left with a van full of food, treats, pet litter, bedding and cleaning supplies for the Foundation.

Guided reading will be starting again on Tuesday 24th February for five weeks. A big thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help us in leading the reading groups and a very warm welcome to our new parishioner volunteers; we hope you will enjoy working with the children.

Credit Union Quiz Five teams represented our school at the Athy Credit Union quiz, held in Ardscoil na Trionóide on Fri 30th January, including a junior team (3rd and 4th) for the first time. Although we weren’t placed on the night, the children enjoyed it and did well and it was great to have such a good turnout. Congratulations to Ballyadams and Scoil Phádraig Naofa who won the senior and junior quizzes respectively.

Enrolment Application forms for September enrolment have been sent to all who have returned completed Stage One forms.

Tin whistle and tag rugby instruction are now in full swing for 1st to 6th classes.

Kildare Animal Foundation Michelle from Kildare Animal Foundation came to talk to the pupils about their work and about animal welfare on Friday 13th February. Instead of donating money to the foundation, it was decided that families could donate pet food, blankets, cat litter, etc. Thank you to everyone who did so; we had a wonderful response.

World Book Day A reminder to everyone that World Book Day is on Thursday 5th March but our school will be celebrating it in our traditional way, on Friday 6th March, by dressing up as our favourite book characters. Time to start planning!

School closures School will close on Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th March for St. Patrick’s Day.

School will be closed from Monday 30th March until Friday 10th April for Easter holidays.

February 2015 Newsletter

It is hard to believe that winter is now officially over (though the weather remains very wintry!)- the school year is really flying by!

We have lots to look forward to here in school this term; 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th classes will be starting tin whistle lessons with Melanie Butler on Weds 4th February. These will take place every Wednesday for eight weeks.

All classes from 1st to 6th have started Tag Rugby with Joey Carbury which will continue every Monday until Easter. The children really enjoy Joey’s instruction and get lots of exercise and fresh air during this time. We are very fortunate to have the use of the campus Astro turf pitch which is a lovely surface for the children to play on and a great facility for our school.

Please note in your diaries that the West Glendalough Children’s Choral Festival and Sports Day will take place this year in Donoughmore on Friday 5th June. As is usual, there will be a church service in the morning, followed by refreshments in the parish hall. Races for pupils from the following schools: Blessington, Athy, Donoughmore and Dunlavin, will then be held in the adjoining field. Further details for parents will follow closer to the time.

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Liz Deane and the Pearson family on their recent bereavement.

We also extend our sincere sympathy to Walter Craig, a member of our Board of Management, on his recent bereavement.

The school will be closed on Thursday 19th and Friday 20th February for midterm break.

Green Schools

We have compiled our results for November and December. In November we had 8 bags of recyclable materials compared to 4 bags of non-recyclable materials. In December we had 6 bags of recyclable materials compared to 2 bags of non-recyclable materials.

We are currently running a competition for the best ‘Green Clean Classroom’. The class to produce the least amount of waste and to use the bins correctly will win a ‘green’ prize. The winners will be announced in next month’s newsletter.

Finally, we are preparing for the arrival of Dara Wyer. Dara is coming to examine our school’s waste and to see if we are worthy of our first green flag. We have been working very hard for the past 2 years to achieve this so keep up the good work and let’s get our first green flag.

Coffee Morning

Liz and Geoff Deane wish to thank everyone for supporting their recent coffee morning in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital. €2250 was raised towards the purchase of an incubator in the neonatal unit.

January 2015 Newsletter

A very happy Christmas to you all!

School Carol Service: Our School Carol Service took place on Sun 14th Dec and it was a lovely occasion. Well done to all pupils who took part, whether singing, dancing, acting, playing the tin whistle, collecting, giving the bible readings and prayers. Every child was involved in the service and a big well done to our staff for preparing them so well. A special thank you to Eleanor Cobbe for giving so much of her time to help set up the sound in the church, and for moving the Prayerful Place forward and back from school to church. We also wish to thank Alan and Neil for moving the stage to and from the church. Thank you to all who gave collection or donated toys to our local St. Vincent de Paul. We are grateful to the parish for the use of the Parish Centre on Weds 10th Dec, which enabled us to practise for the service in the church.

Christmas Trips: Our trips to both the Riverbank Theatre in Newbridge to see ‘A Most Peculiar Wintry Thing’ (Infants – 2nd class) on Thurs 11th Dec and the Gaiety Theatre to see ‘Peter Pan’ (3rd-6th class) on Tues 16th Dec were most enjoyable and really got everyone into the Christmas spirit. The Gaiety trip in particular was a real treat and we thank the Board most sincerely for their support of this. We are grateful to the P.A. committee for organising both trips and the parents who accompanied us.

Athy Lions Club: Thank you to Athy Lions Club for their donation of €158 to our school from the sponsored cycle which took place before the summer holidays. Well done to all who took part on the day.

Transition to Secondary School: There will be an information night for parents on children’s transition from primary to secondary School on Monday 19th Jan 2015 at 6 pm in Gaelscoil Áth Í, to which all are welcome. The speaker is Emma O’ Regan and it should be especially useful for parents of 6th class pupils.

Ovoca Manor Scripture Camp: This year’s camp for pupils from 3rd to 6th class takes place from Fri 16th to 18th Jan. Forms have been sent home to all the relevant pupils. Please note that all camp bookings are to be made online.

Enrolment: Applications are now being invited for September 2015 enrolment. Please call to the school office to fill in a Notification of Intention to Apply form (Stage One) on behalf of your child if you have not already done so. Application forms will be sent to those who have completed Stage One forms at the end of January.
