School Reopening

The Model School reopens this Wednesday at 8.40am and closes at 12 noon (Senior Infants-6th) and opens from 9.30-11.30 am for Junior Infants.

6th Class Sale – Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind

The proceeds of this years 6th class sale were presented to representatives of the Irish Guide Dogs for the blind. They were accompanied by their dog Sally for the presentation. A massive thank you to everyone who gave of their time and money while attending our sale, I think you will agree that it is certainly a worth cause. A total of €764.80 was raised on the day.

Official Opening and Blessing

The Official Opening and Blessing of our School was held on Thursday June 21^st. We were delighted to have so many parents and past pupils of the Model attend. The day consisted of a Service in our new PE hall led by Rev. Cliff, then the Most Rev. Dr. Michael Jackson, Archbishop of Dublin and Glendalough cut the ribbon and unveiled a plaque to mark the opening. Afterwards everyone was invited for tea and refreshments in the school assembly room. We would like to thank everyone who helped out to make this day possible, parents, clergy, the B.O.M and the Parents Association who all contributed to this special occasion.

Children’s Festival June 2012

The rescheduled West Glendalough Children’s Festival took place on Tuesday June 19th. After a beautiful service in St. Mary’s Church Blessington we were treated to some teas and traybakes in the grounds of Blessington National School. We then took to the nearby G.A.A field for our races. Huge congratulations to all of our pupils who took part, each child represented the school with pride. We won lots of medals on the day and managed to secure the Girls and Boy’s Championships, The Clergy Cup and the overall Winners Cup. It was a very enjoyable day and even the weather managed to behave! Here are some photos taken on the day.

Junior Classes School Tour

Junior Infants, Senior Infants, 1^st and 2^nd classes went on their school tour to Castlecomer Discovery Park. We took part in a guided nature trail and had lots of fun being ‘scavengers’, looking for and collecting wild flowers and plants. We did a water ecology activity which involved getting into a stream and looking for invertebrates under rocks. We really enjoyed splashing about in our wellies! Before leaving we had an opportunity to play in the playground, we loved having this time to play with our friends. Everyone had a great time and returned to school tired but happy. A big thank you to the parents who came with us on the tour.

Senior Classes School Tour

Our senior classes (3rd-6th) recently had their summer school tour in Baltinglass Outdoor education Centre. The tour involved an action packed day which introduced pupils to canoeing, archery, orienteering and indoor rock climbing in a safe and exciting way. The pupils got to sample all 4 activities as well as other games on the day. Lunch and all the equipment required for the activities were provided. The pupils returned home tired but happy! Here are some pictures of the pupils taken during the day.

Smoothie day!

As part of our S.P.H.E program we recently discussed the Food Pyramid and healthy eating. Each child was asked to bring in a piece of fruit and we made delicious smoothies from them!

R Factor

The Model school recently had a visit from the Down To Earth Theatre Company who put on a show called the R actor. Inspired by TV panel/game shows the R FACTOR communicated environmental messages in a fun and interactive way. It used performance, puppetry, comedy, music and audience participation as tools to engage the children, encouraging them to think seriously about key environmental issues and the importance of being environmentally and socially aware.

Grandparents Assembly

To celebrate the Year of the Elderly we hosted a Grandparents assembly in the G.P Hall of the Model School on Wednesday 28th of March. All grandparents and parents were invited to attend. During the assembly we sang some hymns and each class group was represented in various ways. The infants brought in photographs of their grandparents and spoke about them. 1st/2nd class wrote an acrostic poem about grandparents and also did a bible reading based on Palm Sunday. 3rd/4th wrote prayers devoted to their grandparents and 5th/6th performed a play about Billy Goats Gruff grand kids. During the assembly we held a collection for Age Action Athy which raised a total of €240. After the assembly those who attended went for tea/coffee and a chat in the staffroom and also had a look around our new school building. Thank you to Rev. Cliff for providing the microphone and indeed to all those who attended on the day.

Parents Association – ‘ TABLE QUIZ’

Dear Parents,

The Parents Association is looking forward to welcoming you to the Annual Table Quiz on Friday 30^th March 2012 being held at Athy Golf Club. (€10 per person / tables of four). Prizes and raffle on the night.

This year the Parents Association hopes to raise funds to purchase playground and sports equipment in addition to commissioning playground game markings and designs to maximise the use of the outdoor facilities available to our children. These might include hopscotch, chess and snakes and ladders.
