A presentation of gift token and framed photo was made at Assembly on Fri 15th March to Jim Short who recently retired from coaching the pupils Tag Rugby after over 10 years. Jim got a rousing reception from everyone on his arrival and was delighted to receive the presentation. Many thanks to all families who contributed.

We celebrated World Book Day on Fri 8th March by dressing up, discussing and sharing favourite books and doing lots and lots of reading. The pupils made a fantastic effort with their costumes. Well done to all.

As part of World Book Day celebrations, 1st and 2nd class visited Athy Library to take part in an art workshop designing bags to hold their library books. Thank you to the parents who accompanied us on the walk to and from the library.

5th and 6th class celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge by playing in a GAA blitz on Weds 13th March, alongside pupils from Gaelscoil Áth Í and Scoil Phádraig Naofa. They had a great time. Many thanks to Sinéad Ní Nualláin, principal of the Gaelscoil, for organising this event.

Our Assembly room has recently been fitted with a digital projector and blackout blinds. This really makes the room ‘fit for purpose’. A big thank you to Ron and Dave for doing such a good job of fitting the projector-it wasn’t an easy task!

Our Green Schools Day of Action was held on Thursday 21st March in the old graveyard. The whole school, along with parent volunteers, got involved in the clean up. It was a worthwhile and meaningful experience for the children, and an important step in working towards earning our first green flag. Many thanks to all parents who gave their time and energy on the day and a special thank you to Gwenda, Liz and the Green Schools Committee for their hard work to date.

On the 22nd of February the Green Schools Committee held a Futuristic Friday. All the pupils had to bring in one piece of recyclable material. Each class made one construction based on the theme of “The Future”. It was a very successful day and the pupils really enjoyed inventing objects that might be used in the future. We have compiled our results for the month of February. The results were very impressive. We have reduced our waste going to the landfill by up to 88%. We put almost 5 10L paint buckets of biodegradable waste into the compost bin. We recycled 5 bags of recyclable material compared to 4 bags of non-recyclable materials. We would like to thank the people who volunteered for our Day of Action on the 21st of March and to Athy Town Council graveyard committee for supplying litter pickers and rubbish bags.   (Green School’s Committee)
