June 2014 newsletter

We are starting a Book Rental Scheme for pupils in 3rd to 6th class, beginning this September. This will represent savings for parents in the area of buying textbooks. We welcome donations of the following from past and present parents: Mathemagic 3, 4, 5 and 6; Geography and History Quest 3, 4, 5 and 6, Treasury C, D, E and F (not written into).

We have recently converted some of the built in presses in our library to open shelving and have ordered more shelving and wall storage for infants, 1st and 2nd classes. We are on the lookout for a nice big sofa at present, and then our school library will be complete. It’s looking great and the children love spending time there.

We had a return visit from Jane Burns to tell us about the work being done by Christian Aid in Zimbabwe. Jane brought along a pupil’s writing board, similar to the ones donated to schools with the money we raised. She also managed to get most of us to sample a spoon or two of sadza (maize meal), a staple part of the Zimbabwean diet! Thank you Jordan Umo for bringing this in.

Congratulations to everyone in GFS who did so well in their Scripture and Handcraft exams. They came to Assembly laden down with cups, certificates and medals. Well done to the G.F.S. leaders and helpers also.

We held a Planning night for the upcoming Children’s Festival on 7th May. This was well attended and plans are now in full swing for this great day out. Thank you to all who came and to those who have volunteered to help on the day.

Our Anti Bullying Policy has been ratified by the board and is available to view on the school website under the parents’ tab.

Talent Show: Pupils, parents and staff were treated to wonderful entertainment during the recent Talent Show, held by the 3rd to 6th class pupils, under the direction of Mrs Cole, Mr Mc Inerney, Concepta and Carmel. There was a great turnout of families to support it and the proceeds were used to buy a giant green bean bag for our library. Everyone was so impressed by the talented singing, dancing and performing and by how well it was organised. Well done all!
