March News letter

Assembly for Older People

As you may be aware, 2012 is the International Year of the Elderly. We are having a school assembly onWednesday 28th March at 9 am to celebrate grandparents and all older people in our families and community, many of whom enrich our children’s lives so much. Pupils are being asked to bring a collection of €2 each. All monies raised will go to Age Action Athy, a local charity which promotes positive ageing and better services for older people in Athy. Everyone is welcome to come along and share in our worship.

Congratulations to the Athy Model School chess team: Maurice, Chloe, Tadhg, Daniel and Jamie, and their coach, Ben Pateman, for winning the Community games Kildare final in chess on Weds 15th Feb in Newbridge. The team will now go on to represent the school in the Leinster final; date to be announced.

Three teams made up of pupils from 5th and 6th class took part in the Inter Schools Credit Union Quiz on 3rd March. They did very well on the night and really enjoyed it.

We wish to thank the Parents Association Committee, and Vivian Cummins in particular, for all the work they put into producing the Athy Model School Christmas Cards . The children really enjoyed being involved in making them and they were much admired by all who received them.

Thursdays from now until Easter promise to be both very busy and very sporty with Tag rugby coaching being extended to include the Junior classes as well as the older children. We also have a visiting GAA coach coming to work with all classes. This has been made possible because of the fantastic Astro turf pitch we have use of on our campus.

School is closed on Monday 19th March.

School closes for Easter holidays on Friday 30th March and reopens on Monday 16th April.

A date for your diaries: The Annual Athy Model School Table Quiz takes place on Friday 30th March at 8 pm in Athy Golf Club. This is always a very enjoyable evening and we would welcome everyone’s support on the night.
